D. Kay Strickland

Kay grew up in Roanoke, a town surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. She graduated from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a degree in physical education, and an acceptance to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Medical School. She chose to teach middle school science at Greensboro Day School and later relocated to teach science at Sewickley Academy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kay met her husband, Tom Delehanty, and upon completion of his medical training, the couple relocated to Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Kay has been a Back Mountain resident for close to thirty years. In addition to raising two children and assisting in her husband’s medical practice, Kay served three years as board president of her neighborhood’s water association, shepherding the efforts which resulted in the system being purchased by Aqua Pennsylvania.

Recently, Kay merged a curiosity about her ancestors and a passion for the environment. Her research and stories about ancestral lands, in south central Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania, have deepened her commitment to the preservation of the vistas, watersheds, and natural diversity of our landscapes. Kay is an active birder, and supporter of Cornell Lab of Ornithology-Project Feeder Watch and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. She enjoys hiking, with or without her dogs, and discovering new angles to photograph the beauty she discovers.
