Philip Muntzel, Ph.D., a resident of Scranton, Lackawanna County, is an emeritus professor of Theology at King’s College. A native of Kansas City, MO, Phil was an honors graduate of Monmouth College (IL) and holds graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Yale’s graduate department of Religious Studies. He concentrated on issues in religious ethics.
Between Yale degrees in the mid 1960’s, Phil studied at the University of Mainz in Germany. Germany provided him with numerous treasures: a shiny red VW beetle, a second language, but most importantly and enduringly, his marital partnership with a theology student named Barbara Ifland. Phil and Barbara came to the Wyoming Valley and King’s in the summer of 1972 when hurricane Agnes steered their home life toward Scranton. They settled in the hill section where they raised their now adult children. Phil’s academic interest focused on Christian ethics and he has taught in the areas of Bioethics, Family ethics, Moral Psychology and Environmental ethics. For four years he was director of the College’s Center for Ethics and the Public Life. Phil retired in 2010 and enjoys serving NBLT, various Presbyterian church bodies, home repairs, singing, swimming and, most of all, traveling with Barb to visit their grandsons’ Crosby and Diego.
