Bear Creek Lake View Preserve

Bear Creek Village • 139 Acres

The Bear Creek Lake View Preserve located in Bear Creek Village, Luzerne County, lies along the southern edge of Wyoming Mountain and forms the northwestern edge of the borough of Bear Creek Village. The Preserve has over 1000 feet of frontage on State Route 115 (Bear Creek Boulevard). The property adjoins the 3,017-acre New Pocono Trust Property and the 230-acre Faber Property, both conserved by North Branch Land Trust, and is near State Game Land # 91 and a conserved 3,500-acre property owned by Natural Lands Trust—collectively a magnificent tract of wildlife habitat for forest-dwelling species of flora and fauna.

The property’s natural habitat features include steep forested slopes, rocky outcroppings, grassy openings, and overgrown remains of logging skid trails. The rocky outcroppings provide habitat for forest-dwelling mammal species such as boreal red-backed voles, deer mice, porcupines and grey fox, while the unbroken forested sections are home to forest-interior bird species such as scarlet tanagers, red-eyed vireos, and northern saw-whet owls (a Species of Special Concern in Pennsylvania). Another Species of Special Concern, the eastern hognose snake, is also found here, as is the fly-poison borer moth, a globally rare species.

Deciduous forests on this property protect the watersheds of four High Quality Cold Water Fisheries, Ten Mile Run, Bear Creek, Lehigh River, and the Delaware River which is officially classified as a Cold Water Fishery by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The property also provides critical watershed protection for the scenic Bear Creek Lake.

Funding for the project came from the residents of Bear Creek Village, Land Trust donors and a Community Partnerships Program Grant award to NBLT from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Funding for these grants comes from Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund (Key93), the Environmental Stewardship Fund, the Growing Greener Bond Fund and federal funding sources.

The main access point to Bear Creek Lake View (BCLV) is located in Bear Creek Village Borough, Luzerne County on the east side of state route 115 approximately six tenths of a mile north of the Bear Creek Village Dam at route 115 and 2.4 miles south of the entrance to the northeastern extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike at route 115. There is a sign at this location. This access point and sign are at – Latitude 41° 11.051’N – Longitude 75° 45.769’W. There is limited parking here for about four cars. The Preserve is open sun rise to sun set.
