Montage Mountain Wildflower Sanctuary

Pittston Twp • 18.27 Acres

In June 2010 North Branch Land Trust accepted fee title to approximately 18.27 acres of land located on Montage Mountain in Glenmaura, along the Lackawanna boundary in Pittston Township, Luzerne County. By owning the property, North Branch Land Trust will protect critical habitat for a wildflower considered endangered in Pennsylvania called Appalachian sandwort. Nearly one thousand plants occur on this site and are being studied by biologists through an agreement between Hemmingway Development, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), and North Branch Land Trust (NBLT).

The majority of the property contains a mixed oak forest that borders and protects Spring Brook Creek. Within the forest are impressive rock formations deposited by the last glacial retreat over 10, 000 years ago, adding unique geologic character. Most importantly, the Sanctuary hosts exposed rocky openings necessary for plants like Appalachian sandwort, pitch pine, scrub oak, black huckleberry, wooly blue violet, and earthstar mushroom; and a variety of animals such as field sparrow, common yellowthroat warbler, rufous-sided towhee, black racer, and common basketball dragonfly.

The property is owned and managed by North Branch Land Trust and do to the fragile nature of the ecosystem, will only be available for public access by guided natures tours through NBLT.
