Earth Conservancy - Alden Mountain Road

Newport Township • 300 Acres

As part of a mitigation project with Pennsy Supply Corporation, North Branch Land Trust permanently protected this 300-acre site located in Newport Twp. The site protects known habitat for the endangered Indiana Bat.

The Indiana Bat is listed as a State and Federal Endangered Species. Reasons for the bat’s decline include disturbance of colonies by human beings, pesticide use and loss of summer habitat resulting from the clearing of forest cover. Populations throughout the species’ range are also threatened by the spread of white nose syndrome. The conservation sites are owned by Pennsy Supply and Earth Conservancy and are protected in perpetuity from any future development.

The tract is mainly wooded with a mature forest of hardwoods and some soft wood conifers. The topography slopes from a high point on Penobscot Mountain to the south down to a low point below the Wanamie dam site to the north. The terrain is step with intermittent flat benches.

Reservoir Creek, which is a tributary to the South Branch Newport Creek, which is a tributary to the Susquehanna River, which runs to the Chesapeake Bay; and wetlands, pools and other Wet Areas found within the conservation area. Reservoir Creek flows SW to NE to the Wanamie Reservoir and then flows north toward the Susquehanna River. Wanamie Dam was removed in 2007 to comply with regulations regarding dam safety. Remnants of the dam and now wetland can be found in the center of the conserved area.

The conservation area is closed to public access.
